Who killed Philippine Cinema?

As we watched in our cinema class about a talk on who killed Philippine cinema, I realized that I am one of the reasons why Philippine cinema is dying.

The lack of appreciation for the Filipino movies, the ticket prices and amusement taxes, the love of the Filipinos for international movies like Hollywood and UK are reasons why Philippine cinema is killed.

As I reflect to myself, I don’t really watch Filipino movies since I find it corny and over acting sometimes. But still, I find it funny and romantic. Even though I don’t watch much of the Filipino films, I have my favorite film which is Magnifico since it really touches my heart. I love Filipino movies when it is family oriented. Something that is emotional to me.

Maybe, the graphics are also the problems why some Filipinos prefer Hollywood or international movies. The ticket prices and amusement taxes also matters to every movie goers. The ticket prices of Filipino and international films are almost the same, so when I’m in the middle of choosing a film to watch, I automatically choose English films since I know that they will offer great movies, not just to me, but to every audiences.

For me, it is also the government’s fault why Philippine cinema is killed. The amusement taxes went down but Filipinos do not actually felt it. If they really want Filipinos to watch our own films, ticket prices must be affordable in the first place.
