Serbis: What's inside a movie house

The film starts with a naked woman who keeps saying “I love you” in front of the mirror. She seems fantasizing her curves while the door is open. She doesn’t know that her little brother is already looking at her. Then, the innocent kid was scolded and it pushed him to go away in that room. He went to his father.

Serbis is an independent film by Brillante Mendoza and the story revolves inside a movie house in Pampanga. The old movie house that plays nude movies is still running and it became a place of men who are in need of service from other men and also, gays. The men and gays inside the movie house offers service which is sex and the movie house is also their place of performance. Money is also involved here since it is not a free service.

The movie house is owned by the family of Allan played by Coco Martin. Allan’s job is to paint movie posters of nude films which are also used in their movie house. He has a girlfriend played by Mercedes Cabral and after they make love, they are both worried and unhappy with the unexpected result. At a young age, Allan’s girlfriend is pregnant. Their families planned to get them married but at the end of the story, Allan escaped to his responsibility.

Another episode in the film is the love of Allan’s parents to each other. Allan’s father is so responsible and kind, as well as her mother played by Jacklyn Jose. Not knowingly that her mother had an affair with one of the young men who offer services in the movie house. In the end, the father discovered it with just a glance. The plate held by the mother accidentally fell into the ground and it symbolizes that their love and family will be broken.

When it comes to film aspects, Serbis is really an independent film. I bet that natural light is only used in the entire film. It is still beautiful. The camera movements are shaking but I understand it since it is an indie. The story is also good since it reflects reality. When I watched it, I remember investigative stories that are related to the film.
